Jaimz Asmundson passionately joined in WNDX’s mission early on, joining the curatorial collective in 2006, shortly before the first festival edition was set to launch. In 2010, Jaimz would become one of the festival’s main organizers, a function he took on until 2020, when he moved into a strictly governance role within the organization. Jaimz passed away unexpectedly of an aneurysm on Jan 1, 2024, at the age of 42.
Jaimz was an incredible force for independent film in Winnipeg, with a career spanning 25 years – as a filmmaker, an editor, a long time member of the WNDX curatorial collective and as the programming director of the Dave Barber Cinematheque for over a decade. He first stepped foot into Winnipeg’s Artspace building (home to most of Winnipeg’s media arts organizations) at age 15, when he started volunteering at Video Pool, and he never left. We are utterly heart-broken to imagine the Winnipeg and Canadian film communities without his ongoing contributions.
