2025 Festival

The Canadian prairie landscape is like no other; land’s end seems visible before you, and yet remains perpetually unreachable. This illusion is created by the curvature of the Earth, laid bare by the flatness of the prairie terrain. Sifting through two decades of WNDX prairie cinema programming to assemble this program became a similar experience – every time I neared what I thought was a certain end point, the pathway extended before me.

wndrlnd is a sensorial experience, mapping a journey through space and time, across nature pathways, city streets and mindscapes, offering an easy entry into a place where the senses have come to play.

From distances equally limitless and intimate, these films explore places and landscapes of something beyond what we are not, thorough direct observations, tactile surfaces, darkscapes, and memories that return to a past not yet complete.

Notes on Rememory explores the act of remembering as a dynamic and complex process, one where repressed moments resurface. Each of the films in this program delves into how the act of remembering, where each of the filmmakers are able to retrace their individual and or shared histories.

A strange sound is heard after dark. It is uncomfortable yet alluring. A slow midnight drive, a masked party with no invitation, a true slice of toilet cinema. Here are films that force us to look where we want not to, with strange and delightful results.

What we felt when our hands touched the earth. This program features eight explorations of shapes we make while moving. Together, they speak for film as vessels for bodies, performance, and new corporeal timbres unknown.

The first One Take Super 8 Event at WNDX was unforgettable. It had the atmosphere of a DIY punk show where everything could have gone terribly wrong, yet somehow didn’t. If you happened to be in Point Douglas at the Graffiti Gallery that night, you helped create the mythology that cemented the OTS8 into Winnipeg film lore.

Dash Jam is an unfinished web series conceived of when Jaimz Asmundson–a longtime non-driver–finally got his driver’s license, and soon a new car. Determined to turn the car into a production tool, Asmundson made his car a stage to interview local musicians about their beginnings and their influences.
