The 140-page book, Landscape of Moving Images: A Compendium of Prairie Cinema, produced by WNDX in partnership with Nevermore Press, documents artists’ work and independent film histories from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
Covering a range of topics from individual artistic practices to the institutional histories of artist-run centres and queer film festivals, this publication assembles some of the perspectives and histories that give shape to prairie media arts. As stories that usually exist ephemerally and are rarely written about within a critical lens, this text aims to archive and expand the discussion about how environments and moving images shape one another in the diverse landscapes of the Canadian prairies.
Landscape of Moving Images: A Compendium of Prairie Cinema was produced with the generous support of a special project grant awarded to WNDX from the Canada Council for the Arts’ Sector Innovation and Development program.
The book was released at the 2021 WNDX Festival of Moving Image, Sat Oct 9 at 9 PM with a Q+A with the book’s editors, Melanie Wilkins and Solomon Nagler.
