Ceremonial / Valley of Light
Together in nature, together in space-free time. We all become one organism through rituals that are with us if we only remember how to carry and care for them. Some carried in our bodies, some on our shoulders or back pockets. Heidi Phillips’ debut feature Valley of Light and Caroline Monnet’s Ceremonial open a portal to the sacred connection of being alone.

Program (71 mins)

Ceremonial
Dir. Caroline Monnet | Quebec
3 mins, digital file, 2018
Prairie region premiere
⇛ Given the importance and abundance of ceremonial practices to most Indigenous communities, there is an inevitable curiosity from the outside world to ‘know’ or ‘see’ how these sacred rituals play themselves out. But can anything remain sacred and private in a world that demands immediacy and a projected image of what sells unscrupulously as the truth? Can Indigenous communities practice their cultural beliefs without the fear of a camera trying to capture the ceremony?

Valley of Light
Dir. Heidi Phillips | Manitoba
67 mins, DCP, 2023
Canadian premiere
⇛ Across the seasons, two siblings explore and grow in an idyllic but abandoned landscape. A scientist observes the changes with impassive concern. Later, one sibling returns to piece together the remnants of her heritage.
