2025 FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS:
New Prairie Cinema featuring works by Christina Dovolis + Tavis Putnam, Toby Gillies + Natalie Baird, Hussein Juma, Jaye Kovach + Cat C. Haines, Freya Björg Olafson, Jack Parker, Tracy Peters, Mike Rollo, Miriam, Temesghen and Diana Thorneycroft. Air, Fire, Water, Earth: The Films of Jaimz Asmundson (Winnipeg), alongside the work. The feature documentary Eastern Anthems, with visiting artists Matthew Wolkow (Montreal) and Jean-Jacques Martinod. Seed Songs for Palestine, in support of the Revive Gaza’s Farmlands project, featuring visiting artist Ryley Williams (Calgary). Three specially curated programs in honour of WNDX’s 20th anniversary: 20×25: One Take Retrospective (curated by Alexander Rogalski); Something is Calling You (curated by Jenny Western), celebrating the work of Indigenous prairie filmmakers over the past two decades; and Land’s End (curated by Cecilia Araneda), which pulls from 20 years of past WNDX programming. Plus a panel on Film Festival Strategies for Filmmakers, featuring film festival programmers Scott Miller Berry, Mahler Cuff and Alexander Rogalski. And as always, the One Take Super 8 Event!

A Prairie Syntax: A Feminist Mapping of Canadian Prairie Filmmaking (curated by Cecilia Araneda), presented at the EMAMI ART Experimental Film Festival in Kolkata India, Sept 11, 2025 and featuring the works of Kyath Battie, Christina Battle, Jane McCreight, Lindsay McIntyre, Carole O’Brien, Freya Björg Olafson, Liz Garlicki, Caroline Monnet, Heidi Philips, Nicole Shimonek and Rhayne Vermette. Plus an Intro to Hand Processing Workshop for BIPOC and S2LGBTQIA filmmakers and creators, Aug 23+24, 2025, led by instructors Cecilia Araneda and Solomon Nagler.
2024 FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS: New Prairie Cinema featuring works by Jack Parker, Adrienne Kay, Janet McCreight, Omid Moterassed, Ryan Steel, Anna Holmen, Robyn Adams and Ania Ślusarczyk. Alongside the Canadian premiere of Heidi Phillips’s experimental feature Valley of Light. Visiting artist Terra Long (Vancouver) introducing her feature documentary Feet in Water, Head on Fire (in a film selection made by Jaimz Asmundson before his untimely death) and leading a Re-Photography Workshop on hybrid analogue approaches. The performances TRANS THE MIRROR by Anto(n) Astudillo (Chile/Brooklyn) and MÆ – Motion Aftereffect by Freya Björg Olafson (Winnipeg). Field Notes from a Rainy Day, a restrospective screening of the short works of Filipinx filmmaker Leslie Supnet (Winnipeg). Trans-temporal Imaginations: Rethinking Experimental Film Practices from South Asia, a program of new South Asian shorts curated by Ushmita Sahu (Kolkata) of the Emami Art Experimental Film Festival especially for WNDX. Studio visits with international curator Anto(n) Astudillo. And as always, the One Take Super 8 Event.
2024 Special Projects: The 8-month long northern Thompson Lab (May-Dec 2024), co-coordinated by Rhayne Vermette and Heidi Phillips and including participants Paytyn Beardy, Krystal Bee, Elise Denechezhe, Melina Gegenfurtner, Jessica Pacaud and Trinity Linklater. Additionally, co-presented the 2024 edition of the Independent Imaging Retreat / Film Farm, June 24-30, 2024.
2023 FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS: New Prairie Cinema featuring works by Amalie Atkins, Kyath Battie, Jaime Black, Simon Garez, Rowan Gray, Christina Hajjar, Chanelle Lajoie, Sylvia Matas, Mariana Muñoz Gomez, pluetoe, Eden Samson, Nicole Shimonek, Ryan Steel, Nic Wilson. Visiting artist Lindsay McIntyre (Vancouver) leading Bite-Sized Colour Reversal, an expanded cinema workshop for BIPOC participants. The first Canadian solo show of Ayanna Dozier (Brooklyn), curated by Toronto’s Sarah-Tai Black. Studio Visits with filmmaker Lindsay McIntyre, curator Nasrin Hamada and art critic Yaniya Lee. And as always, the One Take Super 8 Event.
2023 EXPERIMENTAL MOVING IMAGE AWARDS: In partnership with NIMAC: National Indigenous Media Arts Coalition, we provided eight awards for BIPOC gender diverse media arts practitioners. Award recipients included: Hiba Ali (USA), 김새로미, Romi Kim (Canada), Cheyenne Rain LeGrande (Canada), Nazanin Oghanian (Canada), Kay Chan (Canada), Wicanhpi/Autumn Cavender (Canada), Heehyun Choi (Korea), and Theo Jean Cuthand (Canada).

2022 FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS: New Prairie Cinema featuring works by Gavin Baird, Cyril Chen, James Dixon, Anastasia Ferguson, Scott Fitzpatrick & Alyssa Bornn, Sylvia Matas, Jordan Moreau, Freya Björg Olafson, Jack Parker, Joel Penner, and Esperanza Sanchez Espitia. A retrospective of early and recent works by Toronto-based Pamila Matharu, a program of shorts curated by Gary Varo of Regina’s Queer City Cinema, and the Canadian premiere of ORFEAS21. The Sound We See: A Winnipeg City Symphony, a community filmmaking project was filmed, hand-processed and edited during the festival, and then projected with live sound at the end of the festival. 2021 FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS: New Prairie Cinema featuring works by eleven prairie filmmakers. Off the Record: The Unofficial Films of Rhayne Vermette, featuring B-sides, remixes, loops and rare unreleased hits. Winnipeg’s own Diana Thorneycroft’s installation and an evening of animations made by Thorneycroft and other Winnipeg filmmakers with whom she has collaborated: Evin Collis, Anita Lebeau, Mike Maryniuk and Danielle Sturk. A WNDX curatorial incubator program, A Sentimental Prelude (Sci-Fi Films on Worldling and World End) curated by Christina Hajjar. Franci Duran: In Departure’s Wake, a retrospective look at Duran’s recent and early works curated by Cecilia Araneda, and including workshop on phytograms led by visiting artist Duran. Malena Szlam: Inexistent Time, an all-analogue film screening presented in partnership with Mujer Artista and projected by Irene Bindi, including the Winnipeg premiere of the internationally critically-acclaimed ALTIPLANO. And, as always, the One Take Super 8 Event.
2020 FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS: The COVID lockdown edition was a fully online event with a modified programming structure that extended beyond the official festival dates to mediate screen fatigue. Zoom-based performances by Sweet Prairie Passion (AKA Winnipeg-based visual community artist Annie Beach), Toronto’s Jessica Karuhanga and Brooklyn-based Joshua Gen Solondz. A collaborative live digital concert with musician Beverly Glenn-Copeland and Winnipeg-based animator Leslie Supnet. Small mounds of flesh form, a solo exhibition by Jeneen Frei Njootlli (Vuntut Gwitchin, Yukon), with exhibition text written by Nikki Little Art writing workshop with Toronto writer and editor Yaniya Lee. A studio visit series with Jeneen Frei Njootli, Eve Tagny, Leslie Supnet, Sharlene Bamboat. Umbrales: Experimental Women Filmmakers from Latin America, part of the ISM, ISM, ISM series presented by the Los Angeles Film Forum. The feature film No Data Plan by Miko Revereza, whose work deals with questions of the documentation of illegal immigrants in the USA. A touring program from the Addis Video Art Festival in Ethiopia. Unfortunately, the COVID lockdown restrictions made the One Take Super 8 Event not possible this year.
2020 SPECIAL PROJECTS: Experimental Films for Kids!, presented in partnership with Cinematheque, Jan 26, 2020, featuring works by Art City, Colby Richardson and Leslie Supnet, among others, alongside a free animation workshop one hour prior to the screening, in partnership with Art City. The presentation of two-part Hooker-Niblock / Flowers of the Spirit program on Oct 31, 2020, also in partnership with Cinematheque.
2019 FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS: New Prairie Cinema, including the world premiere Shifting Steps by Winnipeg filmmaker Heidi Phillips, Métis Femme Bodies by Chanelle Lajoie and Dushanbe by Kandis Friesen. Études for Keyboard, a performance by Winnipeg intermedia artist Davis Plett. A performance by Toronto’s Theo Jean Cuthand, in conjunction with a retrospective of their early and newer short videos. The Object and the Body, an analogue-only program of films by Turkish-American filmmaker Nazlı Dinçel, alongside a workshop on analogue filmmaking in partnership with the Winnipeg Film Group led by visiting artist Nazlı Dinçel exploring physical properties of film and hand manipulation techniques. A program of shorts curated by Guillaume Lafleur, exploring experimental cinema in the Cinémathèque québécoise’s archival holdings, including work by Michel Brault, Jean-Claude Labrecque and Louise Bourque. Two solo exhibits in partnership with PLATFORM – Horse Tolts and Palmtree Boxers by Denton Fredrickson, combining hand-drawn animation and collage; and Watching Night of the Living Dead, by Dave Dymant. The Winnipeg premiere of Montreal-basedd Winnipeg ex-pat Ryan McKenna’s feature film Cranks. And as always, the One Take Super 8 Event.
2019 SPECIAL PROJECTS: Experimental Films for Kids!, including works by Winnipeg filmmakers Leslie Supnet, Darryl Nepinak, Ed Ackerman and Winona Bearshield, presented on Feb 17, 2019. The presentation of the feature film Aurora Gorealis: Watching Night of the Living Dead, by Dave Dyment, Oct 25, 2019, in partnership with PLATFORM and Cinematheque. The 1968 George Romero classic is re-animated using found footage of characters from other films and TV shows, arranged sequentially among the bed track of the original film.
2018 FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS: New Prairie Cinema, including work by Heidi Phillips, Leslie Supnet, Jaz Papadopoulos, Kristina Banera, Ian Campbell, Winona Bearshield, Matthew Ripplinger, and Scott Fitzpatrick. The group exhibition Random Variables, curated by Ushmit Sahu, bringing together a group of young video art practitioners from across India. An East Coast Spotlight, featuring visiting artists Amy Lockhart, Lori Felker (premiering her fantastic documentary Future Language: The Dimensions of VON LMO), Cory Bowles (in a program in partnership with Black Space Winnipeg), Amanda Dawn Christie, Lisa Lipton and Winnipeg ex-pat Andrew Milne. A collaborative animation workshop led by Amy Lockhart. The presentation of WARU, a feature film made up of eight 10-minute short films, each written and directed by Māori women filmmakers. The presentation of Avashesh (The Remains) by Manoj Babu Pant. A focus program on the Lyon-based Les Inattendus, curated by Marjorie Couderc. And, as always, the One Take Super 8 Event, presenting 30 new works by Manitoba filmmakers
2018 SPECIAL PROJECTS: A screening and master class with internationally-acclaimed Montreal-based Brayon/Acadian filmmaker Dénis Coté, June 9, 2018, presenting the Manitoba premiere of his feature film A Skin so Soft (Ta peau si lisse).
2017 FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS: New Prairie Cinema, including works by Connor McNally, Matthew Ripplinger, Christine Ells and Bernie Hi, Stacey Abramson, Gerald Saul, Jaz Papadopoulos, Gwen Trutnau, and Isiah Medina. Kelly Egan’s Athyrium Felix-Femina – a film woven into a quilt and then re-constructed back again into a film. The Western Canadian premiere of Matthew Rankin’s acclaimed Tesla World Light. A shorts program and keynote lecture by visiting artist Kent Monkman, in partnership with Decolonizing Lens and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. The premiere of visiting artist Rebecca Belmore’s At Pelican Falls, presented in partnership with PLATFORM and Urban Shaman Gallery. A shorts program on recent Prairie Animation, featuring works by Alison Davis, The Bum Family, Evin Collis, Clark Ferguson, Freya Björg Olafson, Nicole Shimonek, Elisabeth Belliveau, Jackie Traverse, Kiarra Albina, Terril Calder, Don Best, Scott Portingale, Leslie Supnet, Heidi Phillips, Carol Beecher, among others. The premiere of the feature film Mass for Shut-ins, by visiting artist Winston Degiobbi. Performances by Alex Ateah and Ray Fenwick. And, as always, the One Take Super 8 Event.
2016 FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS: New Prairie Cinema, including works by Alex Ateah, Ed Ackerman, Scott Benesiinaabandan, Freya Björg Olafson, Eric Hill, Tasha Hubbard, Self Gravert, Jim Pomeroy, Heidi Phillips, Kristin Snowbird and Leslie Supnet. Museums, Mansions and Thieves: Performances by Daniel Barrow and Berlin’s OJOBOCA (Anja Dornieden + Juan David González Monroy), and dance party with visuals by Martha Colburn at the Good Will Social Club. The Manitoba premiere of the internationally-acclaimed feature film 88:88 by Isiah Medina, depicting the economic struggles of a group of young people in Winnipeg, using innovative editing aesthetics to drive the film’s structure, creating the filmic equivalent of a mixtape. A retrospective on the experimental works of internationally-acclaimed visiting artist David Rimmer (Vancouver). A film processing workshop by OJOBOCA. The installation exhibit Two Days at the Falls, by Berlin-based Isabell Spengler, at Gurevich Fine Art. A Modest Livelihood, a group exhibition featuring the work of Duane Linklater and Brian Jungen, with essay by curator Jenny Western – the work was created from over 50 hours of footage shot during two hunting trips in the Dane-zaa Territory in Northern BC. 2015 FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS: 10th Anniversary Edition! Visiting artist Crispin Glover’s Big Slide Show. A retrospective look at the shorts of Shawna Dempsey + Lorri Millan, alongside the publication and launch of a DVD, featuring an essay by Catherine Bryan. Live film performances by prairie filmmakers Lindsay McIntyre, Heidi Phillips, Ian Campbell and Amalie Atkins. The exhibit The Lost Minutes: Shadow of the Platypus, by David Hoffos. A two-part celebration of the work of Denis Côté, featuring his films Joy of Man’s Desiring and Bestiaire, with the filmmaker in attendance. 2013 FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS: New Prairie Cinema, including works by Christina Battle, Kelsey Braun, Amber Christensen, Isiah Medina, Miloš Mitrovic, Heidi Phillips, Leslie Supnet, Rhayne Vermette and Aaron Zeghers, among others. A Michael Snow retrospective, introduced by the artist, and including his classic and breakthrough films like Back and Forth and La Région Centrale; plus, other experimental works such as To Lavoisier, Who Died in the Reign of Terror, SSTOORRTY, Triage and Prelude. Alongside the 12-hour continuous loop of “WVLNT” (Wavelength for Those Who Don’t Have the Time), a superimposed reworking of Snow’s groundbreaking and legendary Wavelength. A conversation between Michael Snow and Dan Graham. The installation The Twelve Devil’s Graveyards Around the World, by Christina Battle, as well as the shorts program Wandering Through, Across and Within, curated by Battle. The Installation This Is Not Dying, by visiting artist Māori filmmaker Nova Paul (of Te Uri Ro Roi and Te Parawhau/Ngāpuhi descent), consisting of “rays of light and coloured blocks, and interplay of smudged forms that have the look of early 20th century abstract painting.” The First Universe, a program of shorts curated by Richard McDonald and introduced by Nova Paul, inspired by the films of the New Zealand artist, poet and experimental filmmaker Joanna Margaret Paul (1945 – 2003). A screening and discussion series on Beat Cinema, the subgenre of underground films inspired by the literary Beat movement, presented by film historian Jack Sargeant.
